Services: Web Design, Database
Description: The Minnesota Department of Finance is a state agency with five divisions that provide services ranging from financial planning and budget reporting to forecasts of state revenues.
The Challenge: The Department of Finance had a web site but it was ugly, essentially text based, containing difficult to locate and out of date information. They were in need of a fresh design, as well as a complete organizational restructuring of the site to allow for existing and new content. Also high on the priority list was the development of an Intranet to be used as an employee resource. The Technical Services unit wanted to track users coming into the FTP server for application downloads and also to develop a database for their technical contact network.
Our Solution: DOF worked heavily with Aimee Abbott for the redesign and development of their new web site. The site content was organized to aid in the storage as well as efficient retrieval of information. The new design was appealing and allowed for ease of navigation. With the input from the designated web subcommittee led by Aimee, an intranet was developed that would allow for department interaction. The five departments would be able to share documents, scheduling, and even recipes.
In order to accommodate the need to track users and archive contact member information, two databases were constructed. The first database was generated by a script that tracked users from the various state agencies and then allowed the download of the special program. The second database was built to take the information from a form and input it into a database to be used as a shared resource for technical contacts.
